Ongaku To You's Songs, Artists, and New Artists of the Year for 2021!

2021 was a very interesting year for the Japanese music industry and we at Ongaku to You would like to praise the songs and artists that helped us traverse this amazing year. Each member broke down the year in three categories; Song of the Year, New Artist We Discovered in 2021, and lastly our Artist of the Year. We hope that 2022 will bring many surprises to the Japanese music industry like we received in 2021!

Luna’s Top Song and Artists of 2021!

Song of the Year: “JOYRIDE” by Miliyah Kato

When I first heard 'JOYRIDE', I was immediately pulled in by the lyrics as they are sad, emotional, and make a tremendous impact. Miliyah's vocals fit 'JOYRIDE' perfect in every aspect; she knows how to hit each note matching with the melody of the song. Miliyah's vocals, lyrics, the melody all come together making it a song that makes an impact. 'JOYRIDE' has personally made that impact moving me to tears and it has made its way onto my playlist on repeat.

New Artist of the Year: BRIDEAR

BRIDEAR was a pleasant surprise finding out about this year. They were recommended to me by several people in the JME music group and also popped up on my Apple Music recommendations. I started listening to their Baryte album, which pulled me into checking out more of their music. The tracks "Ghoul" and "Mirror" made the biggest impacts on me. I enjoy metal but I don't listen to it as often, however, when I do, BRIDEAR is the type of band I enjoy listening too. Vocals, compositions, lyrics - all the members blend so good together when creating music. Ever since I did MC on them, I've add them in my rotation.

Artist of the Year: CREAM

This year, I dived deep into the Hip-Hop/R&B fusiion scene and CREAM became a huge part of my playlist this year. In 2019, "Banana" got me into the group, my MC got me further. This year, I took a turn of going through their whole discography again and appreciating it to no end. CREAM has four songs and all four are in my top 10 on Apple Music Replay for most played. On top of that, I've listened to CREAM the most this year. Not only has CREAM released several new digital singles this year that are on many of my playlists but their older songs such as "Change", "Wonderland", "Playboy", "Girl LIke Me", "Banana", and "#nofilter" have been the most played for me. 2021 has consisted of CREAM and Yayoi Daimon, however, CREAM has reigned supreme.

Gray’s Top Song and Artists of 2021

Song of the Year: “Ame ga Hajimari no Aizu” by 7ORDER

I love this song and while I've technically listened to "Seiyaku No Toushi" more, "Ame Ga Hajimari No Aizu" has my heart. I just love the melody and song composition. Everything works so well together. The vocal work at play here is super good. Every member does a standout job and the harmonization in the chorus is just spectacular.

New Artist of the Year: White Jam

I've been obsessed with White Jam since I covered them for MC and I know I talked about them all the time on the show. I love Shirose and Niki's vocals plus you have Gashima's rap which is always done super well. White Jam doesn't release too often, but when they do they really make it something. Can't wait to see what these guys do next.

Artist of the Year: Da-ICE

Becoming my consecutive artist of the year, Da-ICE started off the year really strong and stayed consistent throughout. Their latest release is their "CaITRUS" first take which is just phenomenal. Also I'm eagarly anticipating the release of their song "Live Devil" which is being used for the excellent Kamen Rider Revice. I know I haven't talking about them too much on the show but I'm still carrying the torch for these guys and I can't wait to see what they do next.

Ken’s Top Song and Artist of 2021

Song of the Year: “Fushigi” by Gen Hoshino

This was one of the songs that upon first listen I knew that would be a part of my top songs of the year. However, to becoming number 1 is something of a surprise due to the fact that i didn’t know how much I would absolutely love it. While Hoshino might not be an artist that I’m a total fan of, I do respect the range of styles this man does. As the release before this “Create” was to my dismay, a track that did capture me like the mass have, but “Fushigi” more focus on Hoshino’s vocals with its slow to mid-tempo composition absolutely encompassed me like “Pop Virus” had years ago. While I might not like all of Hoshino’s releases, I cannot deny the influence “Fushigi” did to me throughout the year.

New Artist of the Year: Rung Hyang

Rung Hyang is the breakout star for me in 2021 as she brings a unique taste as a "soul" writer who continues to evolve with an "omnivorous" style. They incorporate various genres such as Jazz, Hip Hop, Soul, and folk, with realistic lyric styles that anyone can relate to. Hyang is sure to have a work that fans can always jam to throughout her amazing and varied discography. While her solo work is phenomenal, her collaboration work is some of the best work I heard of in the pandemic era.

Artist of the Year: TENDRE

What more can I say about TENDRE that I haven’t said before in my prior Music Corners. I shall reiterate that I was really afraid of his signing to EMI RECORDS of Universal Music Japan, his style, while not bad per say, is very difficult to garner an audience in which studio tampering could happen. So to my present surprise, TENDRE’s style is still there and doesn’t skip a beat. While this major label debut was the biggest thing this year for him, it was also what he did behind the scenes as a composer and produces that proved more then enough to become my artist of the year for 2021.

“Bubble Love” by Da-iCE

I’ll be honest, I didn’t realize this track was out and I heard they were doing the opening to the next Kamen Rider series, so to get hyped I looked to see if Da-iCE had dropped anything and sure enough they had dropped three tracks. The songs I put out are my favorite. The release has their signature cool style that I just love so much and it’s really catchy to boot.

“SUM BABY” by BALLISTIK BOYZ from EXILE TRIBE

Let it be said that BALLISTIK BOYZ knows how to drop a great summer track, with “SUMMER HYPE” last year and “SUM BABY” this year. This is just a fun track to listen to and now I’m going to look forward to their summer release next year. The rapping in this song is done so well, your missing out if you haven’t listened to this one yet.

Check out “SUMMER HYPE” here and the music video below!

“Amagoi” by Jang Keun Suk

Jang Keun Suk is two for two now. I don’t think “Amagoi” hit the hi that emotion did but this track is still really good and I’ve been playing it on repeat since it dropped. I just love Suk’s style and this track oozes style. I’m officially a fan and look forward to diving into his discography sometime in the near future.

Check out “Amagoi” here and the music video below!

WHITE-JAM-Small.jpg

“Shinu Hodo Suki” by WHITE JAM

WHITE JAM came to my attention last year just browsing through Apple Music and I recently went and really dove in which I’m so glad I did. Now I’m a huge fan of this trio and this is their latest release. It’s really good with amazing rap and great vocals. Shirose’s singing voice is what I wish my singing sounded like.

“So What” by SPiCYSOL

This is a pretty recent discovery for me and I’ve really enjoyed their music from everything that I’ve heard. The composition for this song is really catchy and easy to listen to. That has really turned into a must-listen track.

Check out “So What” here and the music video below!

Gray's Ongaku Go For January 2021

“Paradise” by Rude-α

This is the latest song by one of my favorite rappers and it’s super catchy. I really enjoy the flow and feel of this tune. It is definitely a lot of fun and it is nice to see Rude-α starting off the new year on the right foot.

Check out “Paradise” here along with the official music video below.

mukaitaichi_jkt202012.jpg

“Get Loud” by Mukai Taichi

This is the very first song I’ve ever heard of his but it’s captivating and different from what I usually listen to. I love his vocals in this song and the overall uplifting feeling. This number is a lot of fun.

Check out “Get Loud” here along with the official music video below.

191887_622255.jpg

“STAY” by Erika Nishi

I really like her R&B style and this particular number is pretty catchy. R&B is a genre I genuinely struggle with but I’ve liked almost every song I’ve heard by Erika Nishi. This song is definitely worth checking out.

Check out “STAY” here along with the official music video below.

sakurazaka46_jkt202012_typeA.jpg

“Nobody’s Fault” by Sakurazaka46

I’ve really missed Keiyakizaka46, so it’s nice for them to come back with this rebranding as Sakurazaka46 even if it is something that is different from the original. “Nobody’s Fault” feels in many ways to me like a classic Keiyakizaka46 song, “Kaze Ni Fukare Temo” in particular. I’m glad to see these girls back and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next.

Check out “Nobody’s Fault” here along with the official music video below.

“Time Is Life” by Da-iCE

Would it be an Ongaku Go without a track by Da-iCE? Probably not, and this one is awesome. What a joy this number is. Super catchy and lots of fun definitely a pick-me-up song that lifts the listener up if they are feeling down.

Da-iCE Breaks Down the SiX with a Unique Commentary!

SiX Jacket Cover

SiX Jacket Cover

With the distinctive four-octave range of their dual vocalists and amazing dance performance skills, five-member group Da-iCE are making waves in Japan’s music scene. Their new album SiX was released today, January 20.

Consisting of members Sota Hanamura, Yudai Ohno, Taiki Kudo, Toru Iwaoka and Hayate Wada, Da-iCE have been busy this past year. They have released a series of new music for six consecutive months since August 2020, with the guiding concept of delivering “entertainment to stimulate all five senses”. Their singles have been used as theme tunes for a variety of hit TV shows, including top anime series ONE PIECE and Nippon Television drama series Gokushufudo; each release has also rocked the streaming charts, and received acclaim from critics and fans alike.

Since the ongoing pandemic made it difficult to hold concerts at the group’s usual high pace, they instead found ways to connect with their fans through regular music releases, online concerts, interactive video promotions and streaming. Da-iCE’s new album SiX is the culmination of these continuous releases. The album is titled SiX because it goes beyond the five senses to stimulate your sixth sense, too. It is also their sixth album.

Read on below for a song-by-song guide to all thirteen songs, which include five chart-topping singles – all sung straight from the five members’ hearts along with with several music/lyric videos!

―――

Track-by-track commentary: ‘SiX’ by Da-iCE

01. SiX

Sharing the album’s title, this track themed on the sixth sense draws listeners into the world of “SiX”, It opens the album on an uplifting vibe, with the danceable beat and impressive vocals that are unique to Da-iCE, and lyrics written by Taiki Kudo.

02. EASY TASTY

The fifth single in Da-iCE’s six-month series of monthly releases, “EASY TASTY” is themed on the sense of taste. It’s a dance tune with a heavy dose of City Pop that conjures images of hitting the town at night. The lyrics were written by Taiki Kudo and Sota Hanamura.

03. DREAMIN’ ON – theme song from anime series ONE PIECE

“DREAMIN’ ON” was the first single in Da-iCE’s six-month run of releases, and was used as the theme song to the anime ONE PIECE. The lyrics were written by Sota Hanamura, about the importance of having friends and having dreams, and finding the courage to take a step forward. The members of Da-iCE are big fans of ONE PIECE, and Hanamura felt great pressure when writing this song; it didn’t feel real to him until he actually heard it playing during the anime’s opening on TV. The music video for “DREAMIN’ ON” has accumulated over 6 million views on YouTube, and since the instrumental version of the song was made available for free, many fans have shared their own videos on YouTube and TikTok.

04. Time is Life

A song based on the theme of time. This pop tune was written by Toru Iwaoka, Sota Hanamura and Hayate Wada. With all five members singing in unison, yet with each of their voices distinctive from one another, it is a rich song filled with passion.

05. Found it

This song has multiple connections within the album. It was originally released as the bonus track with ‘DREAMIN’ ON’ at the start of Da-iCE’s six-month run of releases. It also combines with the next song on the album, ‘amp’, to tell two parts of a story: “Found it” is a tale of “encounter”, while “amp” depicts “parting”. The song was written and composed by Taiki Kudo, themed on the sense of sight.

06. amp

The second single from Da-iCE’s series of 2020 releases, “amp” features a mid-tempo melody and lyrics themed on the sense of hearing. Touching on love between adults and dripping with sex appeal, this is a very different, grown-up sound for Da-iCE. The lyrics were written by Taiki Kudo.

07. Revolver

A collaboration between Shunichi Tanabe from rock band BLUE ENCOUNT and Taiki Kudo. The two musicians composed the song together, while Kudo wrote the lyrics and BLUE ENCOUNT arranged and performed the music. This is an aggressive rock tune, the kind that could only be created by a collaboration between a rock band like BLUE ENCOUNT and a dance/vocal group like Da-iCE.

08. Love Song

A song written by Takahito Uchisawa of the rock band androp. Featuring lyrics that translate as “The world will be full of love songs” in its chorus, this is a heartwarming ballad that is perfect for a cold winter’s night, making you feel the closeness that only love can bring. The lyric video to “Love Song” boasts beautiful imagery as it follows a paper plane that flies through landscapes around the world, making for a great online vacation.

09. image

The third in 2020’s series of single releases, the music and lyrics to “image” were written by Sota Hanamura, themed on the sense of touch and with a message of “the first touch of love, connected forever”. This is a tender love song that follows the story of love through first meeting to proposal, while its chorus delivers a memorable melody line over a range of three octaves. In a period of history when it is not always possible to touch one another, this is a ballad that reflects on the irreplaceable time spent with a lover.

10. CITRUS

The fourth single in Da-iCE’s six-month run, “CITRUS” was used as the theme song for the Nippon Television drama series Gokushufudo, starring renowned actor Hiroshi Tamaki. ‘CITRUS’ is a rock ballad themed on the sense of smell, written by Taiki Kudo and Sota Hanamura. With heartfelt lyrics that sing of following the path you believe in no matter what, the pair sang with all their souls, delivering a powerful melody tinged with nostalgia that pierces the heart. In the three months since its release, the song has racked up over 10 million streams, and at the time of writing it has ranked for 53 consecutive days on Spotify’s Japan Viral 50 chart since November 16. On YouTube, the lyric video was played over 3 million times within its first two months, while the free instrumental made available via Da-iCE’s website has enabled fans to post their own versions on YouTube, TikTok and karaoke services.

11. Special One

A positive and stylish R&B number, “Special One” is a song with light lyrics and a comfortable groove that lingers in your ears. On an album that offers many varied courses, think of this as the special dessert. The lyrics were written by Yudai Ohno.

12. Melody

A medium-tempo song with a beautiful piano melody, with music and lyrics written by Taiki Kudo. The lyrics evoke strong emotion, inspired by Kudo’s feelings for the group’s fans as they face hardship during the global pandemic. As such, it is a song that sings of the bond between the five members of Da-iCE and their fans – six sides of a dice, or six essential parts of a whole.

13. I’ll be back 2020

A self-cover of Da-iCE’s very first single, which was originally released in 2013, way back before their major-label debut. This newly recorded version closes out the album while allowing fans to reflect on how far the group have come since that first release.

Ongaku to You's Songs and Artists of the Year for 2020

2020 was a very interesting year for the Japanese music industry and we at Ongaku to You would like to praise the songs and artists that helped us traverse this amazing year. Each member broke down the year in three categories, Song of the Year, New Artist that we discovered in 2020, and lastly our Artist of the Year. Song of the Year: “XXKK” by Koda Kumi

“XXKK” felt like a comeback song to me. Koda Kumi always does great songs, but “XXKK stuck out from her more recent songs as it brought you back to her early-middle career mixed with her current music career.  The chorus is catchy, and the lyrics ring true to me as she is my queen. This is the perfect celebratory track of her 20th-anniversary career and it shows who she is now while incorporating her old self as well.

New Artist of the Year: Miyuu

Miyuu was an artist that I discovered randomly on Spotify. I remember that from the moment I heard that first track, "Southern Waves," I was hooked. This track moved me to the point I began checking out all her other music and discovered so much by Miyuu. Her voice is beautiful and despite her having the "girl with guitar" theme like many others, Miyuu gives a breath of fresh air to the industry with her light voice and how it matches with all her composition perfectly.

Artist of the Year: Awich

Awich has had an amazing year - starting off with the release of Kujyaku in January, then releasing her first major label release, Partition in August. Both releases were amazing and I fell in love with how real her music is, her rap style, her lyrics, and just everything about her. Awich brought something new to the Japanese Hip-Hop scene to me and she stuck out in a good way. She caught my ear with so many tracks this year. Her Kujyaku album was a masterpiece in how it was put together and Awich did not disappoint in Partition. She ended the year with a cover of a famous Christmas song and by being featured in the remix of AI's latest single "Not So Different.”  Awich was a "hit" with me all year and has kept me looking forward to anything new from her.

Song of the Year: “Ayumi” by YU-TA of IVVY

I still remember the day I discovered these guys and I always knew they would be at the top of my list. For the longest time it was "Alice" which was the first song I ever heard by them, but then I heard "Ayumi" and knew immediately that it would be my number one for the year. I absolutely love the piano that is in this song. Played expertly by YU-TA, he also carries the track vocally, with the rest of the group joining him only on the chorus. YU-TA’s vocals are on point for this track. The whole song just comes together and I fall in love with it each time I hear it. IVVY has put out a lot of great songs for the year but this one is their best. Even if you are not into boy groups, this one is a must listen.

New Artist of the Year: IVVY

I still remember the day I first discovered IVVY and I've been listening to them ever since. I just love their ability to harmonize and they have a bunch of catchy songs. They just dropped their first album and I'm looking to pick it up soon. This past year will be the year of boy groups for me. There have been a few that I've discovered that I've quite enjoyed, but, of all the artists I've heard over the year, these guys are still my favorite. I look forward to hearing more music by them. My number two song is "Alice" which is just a showcase of how you take a generic song and make it memorable with awesome vocal work and fantastic rap at the end.

Artist of the Year: Da-ICE

Man, I wasn't expecting to fall in love with Da-iCE the way I did, but I'm glad I took the plunge. It all started with Sota's song he did with Beverly, "Endless Love". I just fell in love with his performance in that song and I was encouraged to go back and check out Da-iCE because I had seen them around but never felt like looking them up. So, I checked out their album Face, which came out in April, and I've had that album on repeat ever since. Sota is my favorite mostly due to how I discovered the group, but all the guys are fantastic. They really bridge the idea of vocals and dance-heavy so well. They have a ton of songs, so it's hard to just sit there and listen to them without getting up to dance your butt off. I've been busted in public dancing to Da-iCE a few times, and this in a year when I'm not getting out as much as normal. I'm so glad I checked these guys out. I'm hoping to pick up Face physically soon and I'm super excited for Six which is due to come out close to my birthday. Da-iCE has really made my 2020, and to me there is no other group I could imagine taking this spot for me.

Song of the Year: Stinging Spica by Polkadot Stingray

Honestly, this track was going to be my number one since March or so. I loved this track and it was the small ray of hope that kept me going throughout the year that was 2020. Its simple composition is something that I can get lost in hours on end, and in fact, I’ve done exactly that while doing articles. The guitar work done by both was something that just intices me even more to the track every time.

New Artist of the Year: Daichi Yamamoto

Honestly, for New Artist of the Year this was a very easy choice for me to make, as listening to Yamamoto has been a treat for the eyes and ears for a genre that I only listen to once in a while. His various demos on his YouTube channel is what won me over, to be honest. The Tokyo Drift remix is absolute fire and really shows his range and diversity. That one spark of “Blue Berry” ignited a passion for me to dive deep into his discography.

99005D7F-F277-4AA7-B69B-8968B7A1F6E3.jpeg

Artist of the Year: Polkadot Stingray

Now. for overall Artist of the Year, this was another easy pick as Polkadot Stingray, as a whole, had a very sold year for me with three digital singles, one mini-album and one full album that were, in my opinion, just hit after hit even in this horrible year that was 2020. Polkadot was also one of the first groups to transition to streaming concerts back in June, when the ongoing pandemic was reaching in Japan, and proved that artists with big labels backing them can make this successful. With the release of their album, Nanimono, in December, the band has no plans on backing down for 2021 and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for fans.
